Definitions of BDSM(NOTE: The following definitions and ideas are those expressed by Huntress and although others may agree with them, they are not necessarily the only definition as each person has their own ideas of what different terms mean or relate to) |
|
Bondage |
Involves the tying up or otherwise restricting or immobilising someone. Many people enjoy the sense of helplessness and being at someone else's mercy. It can involve the use of such things as ropes, cuffs, gladwrap, blankets, blindfolds, and bandages. It can include forms of play such as Isolation, mummification, and sensory deprivation. |
Discipline | Often involves the testing of a person's willpower and their ability to control themselves and their ego. This area of interest can involve such activities as simply sitting perfectly still for a set period, or standing in a corner and ignoring all external activity. Discipline can also involve such things as 'rationing' of something, by means of one person always having to ask for something or to be allowed to do something by another person, or follow certain rules even when no-one else is about. Examples of this are only having some 'treat' such as chocolate when allowed by someone else or when certain personal goals, such as all housework being finished, have been achieved. Only smoking when given permission of when outside, etc. |
Domination | Taking control and/or responsibility of another, physically and/or mentally. This involves getting, or trying to get, others to do what you want even though they might not like to. It can include mind play, power exchange, pushing others' limits both mentally and physically, making others try new things, making others confront fears, taking someone to 'the edge', taking someone out of their 'comfort zone', taking care/control/responsibility of another, forcing or teaching someone to do things 'your way' and for you. |
Submission | Giving up of control or power to another. Surrendering, or letting go of responsibility. This is something that generally requires great trust, especially to let others find or push someone's 'boundaries'. It can involve taking care of and/or being taken care of by, someone under the rules and guidelines they dictate. Slavery, whether voluntary or not, is often considered to be an extreme form of submission. |
Sadism | Involves giving pain to others, enjoying others' pain and suffering, and can be seen as cruelty. |
Masochism | Involves receiving pain and/or enjoying pain. It can include self mutilation, letting others hurt oneself, and turning pain into pleasure. Many believe it is the adrenalin rush associated with the body trying to fight pain that is what a person enjoys in this area of life, much like marathon runners. |
Vanilla | Ordinary, 'normal people', safe, boring, 'missionary position', general term for those not in the lifestyle |
Top | Person taking the 'Dominant' role in 'play'. Usually working with a lot of negotiation and feedback from a 'bottom' or submissive |
Bottom | Person taking the submissive role in play, the one having things 'done to' them and often asking for or directing what they wish done or how they wish things done. |
Submissive,
| One giving control of themselves over to another for some period of time. Although they have limits etc. they do not tend to have as much 'control' over how a 'scene' or play session will run, they give the Dominant 'free reign' within the limits previously agreed to by both parties. |
Dominant,
| One who takes charge of another for a period of time, 'directing' a scene, doing what they choose to a partner within whatever limits have been negotiated. |
Slave | One who gives over 'complete' control to another for a period of time. They may often say what they prefer to do or what their limits are, but to some degree a Dominant can 'ignore' this as ultimately all choices are down to the Dominant. The Dominant, however, is solely responsible for the care and welfare of the slave since all decisions are their's. 'Slaves' are often 24/7 submissives |
24/7 | Means 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In other words full time. |
Switch | Someone who does not stick to one role, they sometimes are Dominant & other times are a sub, or whatever. Often they will be one thing with some and the opposite to others, although on rare occasions you can have 2 switches together who swap roles with each other |
